30 poems. 30 days: Day 21- Land of the Free

Every day a young girls dream is shattered because she is abused, raped, neglected, trafficked, forgotten, or abandoned. She turns to cutting, binge eating, prostitution, drugs, destructive behaviors and we treat her like she doesn’t belong. That liberty means something different for those suffering, that peace is only a white flag symbolically raised when the battle that wasn’t meant to be fought becomes too much to handle, that only the fittest survive the evils of the world. These lies she eats, the pain she digests, she hides out of paranoia while we shout OUR freedom...

Land of the Free
“my country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty
To thee I sing…”

They named her Patricia Marie,
Because they believed one day she would grow up to be,
The number one defense attorney,
In this disabled country,
We call America.
Stripes of red and white streaming down her leg.
Blue beats her heart, so she might as well be dead.
Addictions she can’t shake,
with legs glued together because she’s terrified to be raped…
Again.
Hair covering her face,
so that she and the background can just blend.
And never be treated, like a true American citizen…
